iTunes Problems

I had to reformat my hard drive, which resulted in the loss of all of my downloaded music. I do not have a backup disk.:( However, all of the downloaded music I purchased from iTunes is on my iPod. Does anyone know whether and if so how I can transfer my files from my iPod back to iTunes? I am afraid if I try, I will lose everything.
