There is a group called the San Diego Wood Turners. Their web site is http://www.sdwt.org/

The club is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners and they have over 200 members. They meet once a month, typically up in San Marcos. Take a look at their newsletter that is available on the link that I provided above.
