Just a quick question. I have 1000, 4000, and 8000 Norton stones stones. While many people say that only the 1000 and maybe the 4000 need to be stored in a stone pond, constantly immersed in water, most say that the 8000 only needs to be "spritzed" before use. Does it hurt the stones, or their use, to just keep them all immersed in water all the time.. Additionally, what about the nagura, should it be stored dry or kept in the pond also? Thanks in advance.

John, It won't hurt the stones, but I wouldn't keep them in water all the time because they get slimey even if you change the water regularly. I just put them in a bucket an hour or so before I plan to use them.

They also seem to get rust spots and/or mineral deposits, which although they probably don't effect performance, they are annoying to me...
I have heard, however, that some of the shapton stones tend to "Crumble" if left in a pond for extended periods - the water actually begins to break down the bond. FWIW

I used to keep my nortons in water all the time, including the 8000. Lately, I've been keeping them dry and find that submersing the 1000 and 4000 for 20 minutes is sufficient. I actually find I get a better edge and polish on the blade if I just spray the 8000, though I spray it often during use to wash away the sledge. I've never kept my nagura in water and have never heard of anyone doing so.

I have had my Nortons 1000 4000 and 8000 for about 3 years now. I keep them all in water all the time. I find no difference at all. I have not found any benefit using Nagura on the 8000 and I think that they actually recommend that you do not use it. Peter
