Hi:

What is the best Spyware software? Free or purchased , doesn't matter.

I use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware SE Personal by Lavasoft. Both are highly rated and free downloads.

Anti Spyware Packages

Spybot Search and Destroy

Lavasoft Ad-Aware

Microsoft AntiSpyware

Yahoo Toolbar Anti-Spy

These are listed in rough order of effectiveness. If you operate with a high risk factor by using Internet Explorer, not patching it and engage in high risk activity such as allowing components to be installed, then you will need more than one anti spyware package.

If you use a non IE browser and do not engage in high risk activity then any one of these packages is generally adequate (or even not needed).

No anti spyware package is perfect. One will catch something than another will not.

www.trend.com

they will do free scan's for both spy software and viruses online. It works very well, it's free and they constantly update there data base.

I run the following on my computer since the last time I had to re-format due to ugly virus:

AVG Antivirus
Spyware Doctor (Catches the most)
NoAdware
CWshredder

Since I run them all I have never gotten anything nasty (4 months now)

At home and on my other PC here I also have the Norton Personal Firewall,
had problems with it on the old Windows 98 machine.

Firefox is the best spyware software I have used in a while.

Where can you buy Spyware Doctor? I used the free version of it and that is what found the most spyware. Is there a retail store that sells it. All I could find was buying it online. Looks like it is made in Germany,

I use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware SE Personal by Lavasoft. Both are highly rated and free downloads. That's the same combo I'm using on all my home machines. I'm very happy with both products, especially the part of Spybot S&D that informs me anytime something tries to make a change to the Windows Registry. - Vaughn

Sorry if I'm no help but I bought the downloaded version. If you want it on cd they will ship it to you from http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/purchase/ for $9.95 additional to the $29.95 download.

So far, for me Microsoft's spyware beta has been the best. Auto-scanning, auto-updating, etc.

I use Spysweeper on an ongoing basis, and the rest as needed (adaware, spybot, MS antispyware. Seems they all miss things the others pick up so just one won't do. I belive that Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are a couple of the top rated freeware ones. This months PC MAg has the MS Antispyware beta rated a bit better then the other 2 freebies I mentioned.

I'd recommend this site (http://www.spywareinfo.com/), spywareinfo.com, as a good place to start your education process on how best to protect your computer from malware of all sorts.

There is no one best anti-spyware software application. I use several.

I occasionally scan my computer with Ad-Aware and Microsoft's Anti-Spyware application and always come up empty handed. A lot of that has to do with using Firefox. I am also very careful about what software I install. A lot of freeware and shareware applications will have spyware packaged with it.Here is what I use to help keep my machine secure,

AVG Antivirus (Free)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Sygate Personal Firewall (Free)
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

Firefox Web Browser (Free)
