I have a 690 Porter cable router it started loosing power real bad and arcing sparks I got a new set of brushes and replaced them same problem. Do you think the armature had a glaze over it ? Was it supposed to clean it before installing brushes?

I retired my 690 years ago. It was a good router in it's day. It's motor does well in a router table.
I prefer Dewalt.

Yes you should clean the armature but more than likely its time for a new router!

That sounds more like shorted windings.

Had that happen to one of my 690's recently and traced it to a broken casting that holds the brush holder. Dang router was only 20 years old...they just don't make 'em like they used to. :D
It's now parts for my other 690's.
