Just saw this project and while I am not a turner, this I would try if I was.

Mark, that is definitely some pretty cool stuff. I turned for several years until I had a terrible accident with the lathe and just couldn't get myself "back on the horse". I always wanted to try this project but never got to it. A lathe is an amazing machine and produces simply incredible results. I envy those that have mastered it and have stayed with it.

One of the endearing things about turning is that you can create art from almost anything...and that's a wonderful example!

That's very creative!

Gobs of glue/epoxy I'm guessing?

My son and I built one of these. Took a 3" PVC pipe, around 7" long and taped at the bottom, and centered the pipe in the bottom of a plastic craft container. Then, we filled the outer rim with colored pencils. Finally, after filling the tub with epoxy, we gently lifted the pipe about 1/2" off the bottom, allowing the epoxy to fill in the gap underneath the pipe. After a day, we put it in the lathe, and Mitchell turned out one of the coolest pencil holders I've ever seen. Got him an A in his wood shop class. Good luck.
