Is there any way to get the sand shading effect once the wood is down onto the piece of furniture?

No. Ya might try a stain, but the result will be "iffy".

Possibly. You can dam the area you don't want shaded off, then apply the hot sand, then brush it off when charred enough. You will need to do each shaded area separately.
If you put the inlay in with hide glue, then just heat it and remove it, shade it, and reglue. Otherwise, consider hide glue next time.

I don't know anything about sand shading, but you might look at a pyrography pen with a shading tip to see if it would accomplish what you want.
