What is the max number of coats applied to finished wood before it becomes redundant? How much time should you wait between coats?

Applied properly, buffing each coat, it makes little difference since applying one coat removes much of the lower coats. The wax doesn't cure. When the solvent has evaporated it is done. The amount of wax is almost purely an aesthetic question adding little protection short of troweled on lays.

The only benefit of multiple coats would be when you are using the wax to fill the pores of the wood. In that case, it might take more than one coat just to fill the pores. Once the pores are filled, I don't see a benefit of applying more than one additional coat. There was a really good article in FWW several years ago about how to use wax. It showed that wax is best applied by putting it inside a piece of cotton cloth and rubbing that in circular patterns over the wood. You end up applying very little wax but the result is a thin, uniform layer than buffs out easily to a beautiful, consistent sheen.
