I'm getting ready to route a rabbit along all four edges of a squared piece and I forgot. Which do you route first to eleminate chip out? The ends (across the end grain) or the sides (with the grain).

I would do the end grain first then with the grain that way if you get tearout in the corners on the end grain the router will clean it up for you.

Also if you can, use a climb cut (in the direction that the blade is turning) I had a piece of maple that I had to route the end grain in and that was the only way I could get it right. Here is a link on the subject of reduceing tearout from a well know "Router wizard's" web page.
