I went to the store and ask for a snack from years past, shoe strings (like thin potato shoe strings in a can). The clerk laughed as though they never existed. I left a fill in the blank so you can place your own item/event from the past, but do any of you know if they still make shoe strings?

Of course I looked at Amazon:

I remember them well, they were made by French's, Pik-Nik and Butterfield I believe. Walmark carries them as does Amazon still, even in BBQ and Salt and Vinegar flavored.

We haven't had shoe string potatoes at the house for years then my wife came home with a can about a week ago. I just looked in the kitchen to see the name but it hasn't survived. I didn't see the can in the garbage.

Remember the Jello that you poured in the cup and it separated into three layers? Remember Mrs. Butterworth syrup with 2% real butter?

I miss fire brewed in copper kettles Strohs. The stuff sold now just isn't the same.

They're in the convenience store around the corner, and at the supermarket in town.

Me, I miss Simba soda. It was great as a kid. As an adult I might gag on it, but I drank it every chance I got when I was 10 or 12.

Schwepp's bitter lemon and bitter orange. I liked the bitter lemon with rum.

Denison's lima beans and ham, haven't seen those in stores for a long time.

There are a lot of local beers that disappeared over time. Some survive in name only as their naming rights were picked up by others. Not sure if Olympia beer still exists. Same with originals like Hamms or Lucky Lager. I think the names may still exist. Most of them were not beers of my liking. One of those would be Mackison's Triple Stout, haven't seen that in ages either. It was thick enough to use as pancake syrup.

Any one remember Seven Up candy bars? There were seven different items separately covered in chocolate. Many other candy bars that have disappeared over the years, many of which I can not recall the names. Every once and a while I see Mountain Bars, Brown & Hailey makes them daily, but they are not the same.

You can still find non-homogenized milk, but not many places. With non-homogenized milk, the milk under the cream is pretty much skim milk. You'd have to shake the milk to mix the skim and the cream before using. Otherwise, the first user of the bottle would get the cream and the rest would be stuck with skim milk.

You can understand why most people prefer homogenized milk.

BTW, milk is homogenized by physically breaking up the cream globules. See here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk#Creaming_and_homogenization)for a description.

Mike

[Yes, I remember non-homogenized milk and the problems of getting the bottom of the bottle. We milked our own cows and my mother would take most of the cream to make butter. I had to get up before school to milk cows. You can understand why I went to college.]

SanPellegrino makes a blood orange drink called "Aranciata Rossa". I like that it isn't overly sweet. I also like their regular orange and grapefruit flavors.

Well, there is some good news in candy department. According to on line reports Mars Bars are back as almond Snickers.
Just thought of a candy sales story. When it was sold in its own department in big clear glass bins ,the manager of a store noticed the customers seemed to wait and mill around for a particular girl to help them. When he asked the girl about that she said that the other girls always put too much candy on the scale and then took off candy to arrive at ordered quantity. But she always put too little on the scale and ADDED candy to get to ordered amount.

For some reason, Spam is extremely popular in Hawaii (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/Menuism/why-do-hawaiians-love-spam-so-much_b_1901306.html). They make all kind of Spam dishes.

When SWMBO and I eloped there, we discovered that. We heard it was in no small part due to the cost of shipping meat; it's all brought by cargo ship or plane, and Spam keeps a lot longer, so it's cheaper. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As an aside, I had Spam again recently and found it seemed far fattier than it was when I was a kid. (Military brats eat a lot of Spam, it seems, and I was no exception.) Maybe I've just got a more refined palate now.

Jim! Yes on Bitter Lemon. I've asked at all the major liquor stores in the area for years, and no one carries it or will order it.

I have found it in grocery stores in the 'mixers' section with tonic water, etc. I've even seen it in a grocery store in far SW Virginia!

Who remembers Plymouths with automatic transmission push buttons on the dash?

When I was 3 or 4 (so a long time ago) we had a station wagon with pushbutton transmission. I was playing in the car one day and evidently put it in neutral. Car rolled slowly down the slight slope of the drive, crossed the road, rolled into neighbors yard and stopped in a bit of a ditch. I remember nothing of it of course, but my Mom told the story many times about how lucky I was because it was a busy street (for the time, nothing like today I'm sure).

That was the first in my long history of getting into trouble by pushing buttons ;)

The Almond Snickers is close to the original Mars bar (except in physical shape), but I don't think it is identical. The Mars was fluffier or lighter (probably more air whipped into the nugget). But still the Almond Snickers is better than nothing. Modern "Mars" bars sold in some ethnic stores and also available in Europe are virtually identical to our current Milky Way bars.

Guess this way a long winded way to say my favorite missing item is the Mars bar.
