Another handy device are auger bit levels. If boring horizontal a large washer can be put on the shaft. This will work for augers with a parallel shaft. Some augers and Forstners have tapered shafts so this trick may not work as well. The two most common spirit levels for augers are the Stanley 44 and the Tower & Lyon Pocket versions. The Stanley #44 has notches that can will hold it at horizontal, forty five, and perpendicular. The Tower & Lyon has a movable level with a protractor scale that allows any angle from horizontal to perpendicular. Either of these levels can also be attached to a straight edge or square for more versatility.

I have a Stanley one but I really like that Tower & Lyon one. I'm always drilling odd angles. I'll have to try and find one.

You're just trying to make me feel deep envy; and you're succeeding.

Sigh...... now I have to go look for a level. I just acquired my depth stop. . . .

While I've never had occasion to drill a level hole with an auger bit, I've seen a suggestion of slipping a suitable flat washer onto the shank of the bit, and keeping it in the same position on the shank as you bore the hole. Slides toward the brace: raise the bit. Slides away from the brace; lower the bit. I should test the idea some time, just to see if it works.

Bill,

Your taking all of the fun out of it.:) It sounds to me like it would work.
