Stumbled on this electron microscope video done by some Japanese engineers. It was interesting to me to see the impact a chip breaker (on a hand plane) has based on its shape and position. Also it reminds you how fluid wood can be when looked at under these conditions.

Wonderful video, thanks!
Is this actually an electron microscope or an optical microscope? I understood that an electron microscope needs two things I didn't see here: operation in a vacuum chamber, and non-conductive components made conductive (perhaps by coating with metal atoms.) But I'll have to ask a friend here who uses one in his research.
I see also see from the comments that woodworker Bill Tindall had something to do with getting this video posted.

I have used electron microscopes and this looks like a high powered optical microscope. No matter what it is, this is some amazing video. Now I want to see different woods.

Amazing video, but my jaw really dropped when I watched the next suggested clip

Coincidentally, I happened to come across that last night & watched it. Great video.

This should start yet another "discussion" regarding chipbreaker positioning. Think I'll make some popcorn and settle in.

Do a quick search. This video generated plenty of discussion earlier.
Thanks for bringing it back. I love to watch it, it is not only a fascinating subject, it is mesmerizing to watch.
