Today I went to have a look at Veritas shoulder planes. I have been wanting one for a while. But a 300USD tag I could not justify.
So I went to an antique store where I remembered seeing tons of plane bodies with all blades stolen. The bodies don't cost anything but are great wood. In another bin I found a rusty chisel (Sheffield warranted) and a wedge that did not quite match.
I came home, did some work and headed off to the garage/workshop.
I cut the chisel with a hecksaw to try get a profile of a blade. 345772345773
Then I flattened it just enough to try hand cut a bevel. I was worried that I would struggle freehanding a 10° skew bevel. Wasn't bad. Worked well enough. 345774345775
I fitted the blade and tweaked the wedge. Stripped the blade just for a quick test. The plane works great!! My first skew shoulder plane. It cuts a soft pine tenon cheek shoulder like butter. None of my other well tuned planes can curl a shaving cross grain. 345776345777
Total cost - 5USD and some elbow grease.
