We are building a house with a spiral staircase. My shop is in storage and the stair people want $3000 to make treads from a non-standard wood. I can buy the wood for about $600.

My plan is to make temporary treads from plywood and then do the real ones when I get my shop. I can make the plywood treads but I need a few hours with a router to round them over.

We are at 209 Midvale in Falls Church City just inside the beltway.

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to buy yourself a new router!

You might think that but I have 4 routers in storage
Dewalt 625 that used to be in the router table
Dedicated Milwaukee router in the table now.
Porter cable mid size
That little Dewalt trim router

Another one seems like overkill. I may go over to the storage unit and 'see' if the box with some routers is near the front but that thing is packed pretty tight. Chances are not good.

Of course I could go the Norm Abrams way and have a router for every bit.
When he was at the height of his popularity, I sort of wanted to see a Saturday Night Live spoof where he says, "Now we go over to our CAT scanner to check for any nails..."

Are you simply wanting to borrow a router or use a shop? A shaper would also perform the same function.

I would love to spend some time with a shaper. Frankly, those things kind of intimidate me. These treads are sort of triangular things about 13" at the outside, 6" at the inside and about 26" long. At the inside there are some arcs that go around the central post.

I have a nice router table (in storage) and between a handheld router and the table, I would probably pick the handheld. For some reason, I feel like I could control the kickback a bit better going handheld. That said, I would also use my heaviest router (Dewalt 625) for the mass.

thanks to all. I just spoke with my construction supervisor and he has a router of some sort. That might get me through.

Again, thanks to all. I borrowed a router from my construction guy that will be ok. My routers are better but beggers and choosers...
