I have always used a coat of roughly 1 1/2# cut Shellac as a sealer under the water based finish to prevent adhesion problems, now I finally read the label on the can :o:o:o and it basically says I can apply this type of finish directly on Varathane Premium stain once it has dried completely?
Should I or shouldn't I..., it would likely safe me an extra step or should I still use the Shellac only if it's to prevent the the wood grain from raising?

IMO, you can't go wrong using dewaxed shellac as a sealer, whether or not it's absolutely necessary. Dewaxed shellac sticks to most everything and most everything sticks to it. If you do decide not to use it, make sure the OB stain is really dry before applying the WB topcoat. I would wait at least 3 days.

I'm not a gambler, so I will probably keep doing what I've been doing.
