While waiting in line at a small local grocer, a young man (10ish?) told me to go in front of him. I thanked him for being so polite (I only had one item) and he responded, "It's ok, my parents always tell me to let elderly people go first." I'm 53. Almost everyone in there started laughing.

To him, 53 really does look old. Remember how old 30 looked when you were in high school? :)

It's a family grocer and I am a well-established patron. There is a good chance one of the four brothers who own this establishment put him up to this endeavor...... When I was in high school, Farrah Fawcett was in her thirties; she didn't look old.....

Well, it's pretty hard to argue with that. :D

Yes, the grocery owners always notice the old guys who refuse the "golf carts" and insist on shopping in their own riding lawnmower.

My wife went to a local Arby's drive up window one evening to purchase sandwiches for our supper. She ordered it at the station, drove forward, the young kid looked at her, said "Just a minute please." He then said "I refigured your bill and gave you the ""old folks discount"" ".

She let him live.....

Tell you wife that I said the clerk had a sixth sense and realized the meal was for you.

Believe me, if I see someone 5 times my age, they're old ;-)

I'm at the age I don't have to worry about getting old. I was old five years ago! In my forties, with gray hair, I was often offered senior discount, which I TOOK! Figured I might not live to be in my late sixties, but I did.

Pick a Husband, Any Husband (http://www.rd.com/joke/pick-husband-husband/) As the hostess at the casino
buffet showed me to my table, I asked her to keep an eye out for my
husband, who would be joining me
momentarily. I started to describe him: “He has gray hair, wears glasses, has a potbelly …”
She stopped me there. “Honey,” she said, “today is senior day. They all look like that.”

That's pretty funny Rich.

A few years ago we were in a restaurant in Asheville NC when the waitress asked if we were eligible for the seniors discount, which was for 55 years old.

I replied no, then Diann said "Yes I am", I forgot she was older than me by a year..Felt odd to have seniors discount, that's for OLD people..........LOL...............Regards, Rod.

I'm not quite 52. Less than a month away, but I now sport a bushy salt & pepper beard (mostly salt). I've recently had a few cashiers give me the senior discount without asking. Since they didn't ask, I don't feel obliged to correct them.

Got an offer from AARP the other day in the mail, I will be 50 in November. I do have gray hair but I'm not ready for this.

Kevin, I would recommend to get AARP - sometimes very handy for discounts at hotels, rent a car...

I have the AAPR card but must keep my wife's card in the safe....otherwise she'd shred it. It works well for some discounts; some hotels offer 15% off if you have it vs. 10% for AAA. We have both. Charles, some places offer the discount at age 50.

Professor Dr. SWMBO got a coupon printed on the back of the Walgreen's receipt for a free year of AARP yesterday...while we really do a big "volume" of prescription business with them, it's almost all for our 21yo daughter, not the 57 and 59 year olds in the house. Assuming the cross reference of "prescriptions" and "big bucks" (to insurance...) was the trigger for that coupon, of course. LOL :D

I was given the "ofd" about ten years ago. When I was 43. The wife got a good laugh out of it.

The local farm market has been generous lately with the "senior discount" on Thursdays when I happen to show up on that day. I guess I look the part...
