View Full Version : Decorative Front Yard Fence

Hi all,

Like to build a front yard paint grade fence that lasts. Will be picket style, possibly the 2"x2" pyramid top pickets with rails on edge.
Pressure treated 4x4 posts with applied box built out to 6"x6". My wife insists on a kickboard to stop leaves from accumulating on yard from large trees down the street.
One side will have to be curved. The scale is small at about 4' tall and no more than 6' post spacing.

I know how to execute the planning and carpentry, I'm just trying to decide on materials.
I can't stand vinyl as I can spot those from 50' away.
If I stick with redwood, I could use the marine epoxy treatment ($100/gal).
Pickets will probably be redwood no matter what.

I'd prefer AZEK for boxes and rails, although I have not priced it yet. For the boxed posts it's not an issue but I have read that AZEK cannot be used for rails because it sags.
Perhaps I could support the baseboard mid span with cement piers or something similar which would prevent sag but it may be risky.
Apparently AZEK can be bent easily if you can heat it evenly.

I'd really like to use AZEK for the rails not only for maintenance issues but because redwood is so soft.

Anyone have any experience with AZEK rails?

Thanks
