Well, I still have another slab to work with. The "main" section is about.....2-1/4 thick. 5" wide, and 38" long, a bit too much to work with. For the "new" project, I needed a few boards at about 5/8" thick, by 18" long. Intentions is to make a round table top, about 1/2" thick, by 18" in diameter.....Did a bit of crosscutting first..
343680
Took a lot of wax on THAT blade. Hmmm:confused:
343681
That don't look like Cherry, more like Walnut? I needed to joint one edge square ( so it would rock on the bandsaw's table..
343682
Plane is a Stanley No.7c, Type 9. It came with two holes drilled and tapped for a fence. Made mine from Walnut scrap. Note the shaving coming up?
343683
Little sap wood. Marked the piece at about 3/4" or so thickness and run the board through the bandsaw
343684
Between the operator:rolleyes: and that 1/4" blade, we have a bit of waves going on. No biggie, when I flatten out the panel, it will wind up just about where I need it to be. laid these out
343685
Hmm...only 15" wide? Length was ok. Needs another board. Off to the bandsaw, again
343686
What is left over here, will be made into three curvy legs. The "fourth" board?
343687
That black "schmudge" is a knot. No problem, I can add the fourth to the outside, and when the top is cut into a circle.....knot will just drop away.

Need to joint the edges, to make a glued up panel happen. Not too worried about the waviness, as I will be flattening the entire panel after the glue cures.
The No.7 is a tad too long to joint these boards, may drop down a size or two....stay tuned. IF it does cool off this evening, and I find Mr. Gumption, I might get something else down today.....Maybe:rolleyes:

Ok, I put away the BIG jointer, and brought out the StanleyNo. 5-1/2, T-17 to do a few edges
343689
Took a bit, as some were a bit wavy. Finally got ribbons from end to end..
343690
Not see-through ones? We are Jointing here, not finish smooth plane work.
Got all the ends jointed enough for a bead of glue, got out the pipe clamps this time
343691
A little uneven? No biggie, as I intend to flatten the entire panel when the glue is cured.
343694
Clamped enough to raise a bead or two.
I bandsawed the bark off the next slab. Trying for 3" in width. Thickness was a bit shy, so some add-ons were needed..
343699
This will be turned to make the center column. Add-ons are Cherry, maybe a nice high-light?
Which leaves this chunk..
343701
Not too bad, for spending a dollar bill for all of this Walnut?
I'm done for the night, no room on the bench, anyway...

Almost too nice a day outside, to be hiding in a Basement shop......Maybe this evening, I might wander down there.....clamps do need to come off, anyway...

Need to draw a pattern for three legs. Then try to bandsaw them out.....

Lathe is back there...somewhere. Need to clear a path to it, later...

steven c newman
09-08-2016, 9:14 PM
Lathe has been found!
343726
I even have a footpath back to it.
343727
Hmmmm, NOT a treadle powered one...oh well. I did find some tools for the lathe..
343728
So, I guess I better get the blank out of the clamps, cut off the excess stuff on the ends..
343729
Do some measurements to find WHERE the center point is in this ugly looking blank..
343730
And, while I was at the bench, might as well remove the clamps off the blank for the top..
343731
When I get the column done, I might be able to scrub away the high spots, until this blank is flat.
The other blank?
343732
All set up, and ready to turn. Next post for that story...stay tuned..

Ok, where was I? Ah yes
343733
Old motor, plastic fan is long gone. It will throw either the belt, or that little screwdriver, whenever it feels like it. Screwdriver is a belt tightener.
343734
Started at this end. This is also where the legs will join the column. Got this area all nice and rounded, then worked my way along until I got here..
343735
A collar and tenon where the top will go. Worked on that area a bit more..
343736
Still needs work, tenon is too big. Then just back down to the leg area..
343737
Motor was getting a bit too hot, time to give it a break, and me too. Trying to clean all them red and brown chips off of me.

Needs a bit more time on the lathe, column is still a smidge too fat. maybe tomorrow? I'm plumb worn out. Progress has been somewhat made, though....

Just wait until I have to cut that top into a circle.....then the fun really starts...

Well, IF I can find that fellow named Gumption, I may follow him down to the shop today......have to hide from the GrandBRATS anyway. Might try some pencil work, to get a leg design I can make...with what I have on hand. Sore knee isn't making things very easy....all them stair steps to travel on....

Need to thin the column a bit...maybe another 1/4". Same with the collar and tenon. Column right now is 18" long. plus legs.....Bedside Stand? Stay tuned......need to get this done, before they decide how to fix my knee....

Looking good Steven! The amount of work you crank out is inspiring-or perspiring. ;-)

Or both...had to stop for awhile today...was dripping all over the walnut..

Got the top blank as flat as I could, and found a center point..
343772
Made a marking jig..
343773
Holes are 9" apart. I then cut away the waste..
343774
Then planed both faces, again. A spokeshave went around the edges
343775
I saved one of the cutoffs from cutting the top out
343776
To use that curved part. Laid out a few lines, and came up with these..
343777
No, not porkchops...legs..
343778
Needed a break from one type of woodwork, so I fired the fire up..
343779
And even got it all sanded down, after a bit of turning was done. Might be a while yet, lots more to do...

Hi Steven,

The center post is looking really good. I love the deals you get on lumber! Still.......naw......the peak of Ohio is way to far out of the way if your from Texas.

Just have to look a bit at yard sales, is all. I used one of the cut-offs to help lay out the feet's curves. Still need to lay out a dovetail joint for each leg. Looks like those will be a hand tool event. Once I get the leg blanks down to a decent thickness, I can do the pin part. Then lay out a socket for it to slide into. Thinking about using an old Dovetail bit from my router.....to mark the angles. Need one more resaw done, the slat that connects the column to the underside of the top. Doesn't need to be all that wide, and only needs to be...3/4" maybe in thickness.

Resting a very sore knee right now.....getting it checked out Monday morning.....hoping I can finish the table BEFORE they try to fix the knee....

Cooled off today, will try to replace the front brake pads on the van later today.....should be "FUN" to do...Maybe this evening I can wander back to the shop......need to work on the legs for that table.....

steven c newman

Battery on the camera died this morning, while I was working on the first of three legs....decided to work on the van, since my helper finally woke up....replaced brake pads on all four wheels, rotated the tires and waited out three thunderstorms. Worked in my Mom's garage, so we were almost out of the rain.....wind blew some in the open door. Anyway, got home with a family pack from KFC for supper. Burp! Then downstairs to do a second leg...
343863
A little of this.....and a little of that..
343864
Do this enough times..
343865
two down, one to go. I did find out a few things today....one: I hate doing brakes. The back brake pads on a Chrysler T&C van are a ROYAL PITA to replace. Two: The front roller on my beltsander is just the right size..
343866
For that curve. Three: I could use this sander to make sure all three legs are the same thickness, didn't want to use a hand plane, hard to clamp to the bench, and a risk of breaking a part. This is the way I also set up the sander to sharpen plane irons that are in very bad shape.

Going to rest up, kind of worn out right now. Maybe tomorrow, I can get the third leg fitted? Need to round over the outside edges of the legs. While I do have one of them corded routers....bit was too small. Guess I will just keep chopping these out by hand. I did get a pattern cut out, to make the batten that connects the post to the top. need to do one more resaw, to get a piece to make the batten. pattern was a bit too thin. And wavy....

steven c newman
09-11-2016, 11:44 AM
Might try to resaw a chunk of Walnut today. Have one left. I need to make the batten for the underside of the top. Thick enough that the post can be fitted into it, with a wedged tenon. I also need to do a bit of metal working, there is to be a metal plate at the bottom of the post, to keep the dovetails in place....should the glue ever give way...

Hmmm, been doing resaws on a Craftsman 12" bandsaw.....using a 1/4" 6tpi blade.....that includes the four boards for the top...

steven c newman
09-11-2016, 11:36 PM
Luck ran out on the 1/4" blade.....1/2 through the LAST of the resaws. Blade broke. Dug aroundfound the 1/2" (DULL) blade I had taken off, and finished a few cuts. Then the planes and the sanders took over...then the planes came back, and the spokehave as well. FINALLY got the batten done, used a forstner bit to drill a hole,,,
343952
Gave the post a test fit, AFTER I had trimmed the end a bit
343953
Not too bad. Will give the batten a shallow counter bore to "house" the post. End of post will get at least one, maybe two kerf cuts, to make this a wedged tenon joint.
Worked on the top some more, trying to decide which face is more presentable to polite company.....a test fit for one face?
343954
Meh, it will just have to do. Still need to dovetail the last leg, shape the tops edges of all the legs, and see about some short screws to attach the batten to the top.....slotted ones, of course. Oh, and make a metal keeper plate for the bottom of the post. Doctor's visit Monday Morning @ 0830am to get a knee seen to. Will know more about THAT later. still hoping to get this table done before they work on the knee...stay tuned.
Igor! Clean up on aisle #3!
343955
I do tend to make a mess.....now and then..

steven c newman
09-12-2016, 2:13 PM
Knee has been looked at, prodded, x-rayed.....some has given an imflammation. Painkillers has been ordered, and Icy-Hot...along with some sort of cream. Thinks there might also be a touch of Uncle Arhtur (itist) in there. waiting to hear IF I need a MRI.

Might be able to "hop" down to the shop, later today. Need to see about a few screws....for the table, NOT my knee. Have to size a counter-bore bit. Might have a forstner bit the right size.... Need to finish up the legs, too.

steven c newman
09-12-2016, 10:38 PM
Meh....some assembly tonight...
344007
And the legs.
.344008
Not that great a night...will have to do...

steven c newman
09-13-2016, 1:48 PM
Tuesday was a bit better. Needed to make a fourth leg? Done. Needed to craft a steel plate as a keeper? Done
344028
Had an old, junky, Nest-o-saws saw plate. Shape it with the grinder

Well, since I went and BOUGHT screws, NOW I find my stash of them....used one for the steel plate. The ones I bought?
344029
Drilled 8 counter bored holes. Regular drill bit to elongate the holes to allow for top's movements. All screws have been "clocked" as well.

Got out the jar of BLO/Varnish. and gave things a seal coat.
344030
From the four feet, to the underside of the top..
344031
Then turn it over, and do the top of the top..
344032
And just let it dry for today..
344033
Maybe tomorrow, I can rub this out, and add coat #2? Might bring the table upstairs, for a better picture? Woodshop is not really much of a Photo Studio.....

steven c newman
09-13-2016, 7:56 PM
Feet have been trimmed to allow the top to sit level. No rocking allowed, either. Almost done with this. Maybe two more coats of finish, and call it good.

Then maybe a break from the shop. Trying to get about a week with the new med routine on the knee. X-Ray came back as Arthuritis might have a specialist look at the knee in a week, with an MRI......I hate MRI....

First coat is taking a long time to dry....rainy old day today outside. Will try after awhile today....

Top is 18" in diameter..and is 5/8" thick. Overall height is..21-3/8" tall.

Steel keeper plate came from an old saw plate ( nest of saws) and was shaped using a grinder. Visegrips to hold it, and added a block of wood to the grinder's tool rest to support the plate. Sanded off any burrs left by the grinder. Drilled a hole for the screw to attach the plate to the post. All the screw slots are "clocked" including the one in the keeper plate.

The only part for a router? I used a dovetail bit to layout the angles for the hand-cut dovetails on the legs. Round-overs were done mainly with a spokeshave. Tried a narrow belt sander. wasn't that great. Large belt sander was used a bit.

The walnut came from a slab I bought at a yard sale.....for $1. The cherry came from left-overs. I bought both a Cherry, and a Walnut slab at that sale, dollar each. I did not haggle, just paid my $2 and left.....

Ok, for those still hanging out at the thread, how about a PIP or two? Second coat is about dry..
344144
The fancy side of the post. Showing off the Cherry add-on
344145
And the plain side, where just a hint of that Cherry add-on shows.

Plan to rub this out tomorrow, then add a third coat.

Calling this project...Completed..
344200
Only stands 21" tall, with a top at 18" in diameter
344201
Tried to show off the grain in the top..
344202
Might just leave all the plane marks. Just a little night stand..

Thanks to all that followed along. Now comes the time to decide what project to do next. Right now, I have a few things to resharpen back up. Maybe clean up the shop a bit. Take an inventory of the wood that is left over. Might get an idea while doing that.....

Again, thanks for following along.

Steven, that top looks great. I was anxiously waiting to see it because in previous pictures it looked like that one piece was a bit of an oddball. It sure turned out nicely though. I do like t h e character of the top.
