A small little maple hollow form that I did a little pyro and piercing on for my end of the WoW (World of Woodturners) swap at SWAT 2016. About 3" tall and finished with tung oil finish.

Comments and complaints are always welcome.

Thanks. I use a NSK Presto, ultra high speed rotary hand piece.

I like the tendrils coming down from the top. Nice job! (When are you going to get some good wood that is not full of holes? :))

Great HF Scott. Did you create the design or did you use a pattern? I also like the tendrils at the top.

Robert, I don't use a pattern or pre-determined pattern when I do the piercings that encompass the entire piece. I just pierce on the fly and try like heck to keep it random and keep the line spacing between the holes even. On this one and ones that have a line pattern or specific border, the part I do not want pierced are planned out or completed (like the pyro work on the top and bottom of this piece) prior to beginning piercing so that I have a border to pierce up to. Thanks

I think you should try a large one, like 36" x 36".

Believe it or not, a large scale form fully pierced is on my list for down the road. Maybe not quite that large though! My lathe will only swing 23"!

John, I can't really pierce over 1/4" thick and won't consider piercing a 1/4" wall unless I have to. That thick would force 3-4 passes to cut through and that 4x the time involved. It already takes forever!

This one was about 1/8" thick and even at the small size, I had about 3 hours of just piercing with 1 pass per opening. I like 1/8" thick or just slightly thicker for a piece with a large amount of piercing. I have done 1/16" but its not real practical if folks start handling it (too fragile).

Really well done, Scott! This is the first time I have seen a completely pierced piece incorporate a bit of pyro as well, and I like it. Really beautiful!

Scott, this is a gorgeous little hollow form, I'd like to see the top and bottom of it. Would it be possible for you to post a couple more pictures, one of the top and one of the bottom?
