Hi,

In constructing the veneered base for a pet's urn, I might use MDF/BB. Not sure.

Is any special treatment required to the edges of the MDF/BB where veneer is bonded to it?

Maybe 50/50 glue size?

Current plan is to use Hide Glue.

Thanks

The "shop cut" edges of MDF tend to be porous, so after carefully sanding, you may very well want to seal them up with something that's compatible with the veneer glue you intend to use. It's not likely going to bond well to the rough surface otherwise.

I have never obtained a perfect veneer bond over MDF edges unless I apply the veneer glue over the edge first, let it dry and then press the veneer on the edge.

BB end grain will telegraph through 1/42" veneer. I have 1mm maple veneer and it covers plywood edge well with no telegraphing.
Also you can apply 1mm hardwood on the edges first then apply veneer to edges and then apply veneer to the ply faces. If you use thicker(1/4") wood on edges first it will show on the faces.

Thanks guys....always nice to hear about potential blunders instead of making more.
