It may not look like much, but it is a full plate, skew back, 5 tpi , one chipped horn beauty.
Nice chip carving, straight as an arrow.
Another one to get rehabbed one day.

Nice Score! It's actually a 112 though, which is the skew back variant of the #12. Not as common as the #12, and they aren't common. Looks long. 28" blade? Looks like a good day at the swap meet.

Pete

Thanks Pete.
The etch is pretty good as well and it looks to be a 12. Certainly not a D 12, I have a couple of those. Or, is it a skew back 12 that is etched as such, but called a 112?
Thanks again.

It is indeed a 112, not a 12.

And boy is it great to have Pete Taran on board.

For those who don't know, Pete is one of the founding fathers of the revival of backsaw manufacturing.

If I remember correctly, Pete, along with Patrick Leach, founded Independence Tools and started making backsaws in the mid 90s.

There's more to the story, but you can easily research it (or perhaps Pete will tell it)

Joe:
I knew the name and association with Patrick: a font of knowledge to be sure.

There are certainly numerous real life experts here on the Creek. We are fortunate indeed

I have a Disston 12. It's a good saw needing cleaning. I think it's time to give it the treatment I gave my #7.
The handle on it is ugly. I could make a new handle and save the old handle in case I find that the value of the saw is affected.

Is a #7 or a #12 the most valuable?

To the best of my knowledge, the 12 is one of the more sought after.

Mr. Taran says mine is a 12 variant- a 112, even more scarce. I'll take it!

Dave,

The #12/112 is definitely top of the line and much more desirable than the #7.

Pete

Yes Pete: it is indeed 28" on the blade.

I don't know about the 112, but I favor my #7 above my #12. After I put a decent handle on the 12, I may like it more, but as of now, my #7 is my favorite saw. I had to replace the ugly uncomfortable handle, but after I did, I favor the 10 pt crosscut saw. Proper set and sharpening helped a lot too.

I will give the 12 the same treatment as the 7 received.

I know that the 12 is considered to be the top of line Disston, but in my opinion, there's not much difference in the 7 and 12.
