I had to have emergency dental surgery which ended up meaning a rear molar had to be pulled. The problem is that it had fused to the jaw bone and took more than a hour to remove. Had to cut into the jaw, according to the Dr, and by the time I was done, was soaking wet in sweat. I know everyone has different pain thresholds and all teeth are different but I swear, if I ever have to have another tooth pulled, I won't be awake during it.

I had my lower wisdom teeth pulled a few months ago. I just about passed out from I was so worked up about it. Anxiety I guess and anticipating it. Not. Fun.

I had to sit in the chair for 45 minutes drinking OJ to get my head straight so I could walk out of the office.

Back in the '70's I had some root canal's done by a trainee dentist. Unbeknownst to me for many years this guy had left pieces of broken files inside the tooth. For the next several years my 'good' dentist kept trying to 'save' that tooth as the gums around it were always 'iffy'. Don't know how much money he charged me for the several laser root-planing appointments. This thief never told me about the broken files, just used that tooth as an excuse to make money I guess. I only found out about the files a few years ago from another dentist... I should've sued the thief, but that's not me. I will say this about the thief, I was never afraid to have him work on me because it never hurt. Went to him for years.

Anyway, that tooth has always given me fits about once a year. Last year it started up, then subsided as usual, but then flared up with a vengeance. I went to 'The Dentist' (that's the name of his place!) my wife had been to not long before. The wife called him, he fit me in within 15 minutes, with that tooth in full-on pain. Other than a temporary fix or two, I'd never had a tooth worked on or pulled while it hurt, and I was scared to death, but I wanted it gone!

Within a half hour, it, and one next to it that also needed to go were gone, and I didn't feel a thing. It smarted a little bit after the Novocaine wore off, but by the next day, nothing. Just a big hole that took some getting used to... ;)

My father, who grew up on a farm in the 1920s, used to tell the story of getting his wisdom teeth out. The roots were resisting the dentist's attempt to pull a tooth, so he had to crack the tooth in half to extract it. Anesthesia was not as advanced then, and my dad woke up in the middle of that effort . . .

When mine were pulled it didn't hurt, but my problem was I knew what they were doing. Grabbing a tooth and yanking on it and feeling my jaw get pulled all over the place. Knowing that was what got my anxiety to go through the roof.

I had mine pulled. Quick and no problems. Painless.

The doc had to "work" one, pulling it from side to side to break it loose before extracting it but it didn't bother me.

Back in the early 50's I accompanied my Dad to his friend's house. He asked the man's wife, ''Where's Ward?" She replied, "The damn fool is in the bathroom pulling one of his teeth."
That is way out of my league. I want general anesthesia before I leave the house for the appointment.

I had a molar pulled about 2 years ago that didn't want to come out. Had to be cut into 4 pieces, and took over an hour, with a lot of hard pulling. But it never hurt.

I don't freeze particularly well. So when I get fillings, it's just part of life that I feel it. Quite a bit. But I have a really high pain threshold (live with neuropathic pain all the time) and hate freezing so I don't mind. BUT...root canals are another matter altogether. Last one I had, he gave me freezing, poked the nerve with a probe, and -despite the fact I am a lifelong pacifist- I damn near threw the endontist out his window. I was pretty angry. I had told him I don't freeze, but specialists know best, right? Took two extra shots to be bearable.

Freezing? You mean Novocaine?

Yep. Standard amount barely dents it.

my dentist has a couple of patients like me who are like me to the point where they just refuse novocaine at all. He says it's actually harder on him than it is on them.

Just had one pulled this morning. I have a couple of the "good" pain pills from when I broke my shoulder to help. Not fun!

I'm really surprised they proceeded with that extraction with the bone issue without insisting on general anesthesia given it had essentially became a surgical procedure. Wow...

I hope your recovery is speedy!

Nitrous Oxide gas. That'll calm you down.
I get it for any dental work, except cleanings.
