The 2 new water stones I ordered arrived; a German MST MULLER 8000 grit (with matching slurry stone), and a Chinese GUANGXI 12000 grit (also with matching slurry stone). The Chinese stone was flattened using 180grit wet and dry, the top surface of the German stone was spot on out of the box, German quality is hard to beat. The end and side grain strata of each stone, including the smaller slurry stones, were then sealed with 4 coats of Garnet Shellac, before being glue mounted to 12mm laminated glass plate. The attached photo also shows the Japanese AOTO NAKATO 2000 -3000 grit I previously prepped into service. The Chinese stone has the harder surface of all 3 stones. Surprisingly, it took little effort to work up a nice chalky coloured honing slurry on this stone. That's good news.

40 degree/ 1 degree skew Smoothing Plane.

Beautiful plane, and beautiful results (obviously).

Out of curiosity what's the rationale for 1 deg of skew?

Patrick; the skewed blade adds an additional countermeasure to combat reverse grain. For every degree of skew that's added; its also countered by a loss in the width of shaving worked.

Nice results. Is that Douglas fir?

That is another beautiful plane Stewie. Great pictures and stones as well. Everyone is head over heals for some figured grain of this and that but CVG doug fir is my absolute favorite wood. It can sometimes be a pain to work due to the different densities of the early and late grain but it sure makes up for it in beauty. I have a love affair with some of the old growth stuff that I have a nice little stash of and have yet to cut into. One of these days I will find the right project to use the stuff in.
