I was asked to turn a communion set and a symbol of baptism for a pastor who is also my bishop. She is being appointed to another conference on short notice and we are supporting her in love.

All of the pieces are made from Sapele, with layers of De-waxed Shellac, Wipe-on-Poly, and Black Bison wax. The communion set is 10", and the pitcher and bowl are 8".

I usually make the pitchers and basins with a different shape basin, like the one on the left in this photo.
This is a symbol of servant ministry as in washing the disciples' feet.

When I was asked to make a symbol of baptism instead, the water could be poured into the bowl during a service. The basin with the rounded sides splashes all over the place. I had to change the shape of the bowl.

The wide-lipped bowl does three things.
The outward flair on the outside echoes the flair on the pitcher.
The inward flair on the inside of the rim sends the poured water back to the inside of the bowl.
The curved top of the rim slopes down towards the middle so that drops of water on the rim go back into the bowl.
