View Full Version : Grand daddy of all gloats

I have read hundreds of gloats over the years. But yesterday, I finally had a day that is indescribable..

I went to my first bankruptcy equipment auction. I had the time of my life!!!!! I went there hoping to get a tormek, 16" delta RAS, and a laguna bandsaw.

What I got was alot more. I have pics, and will send them to anyone who is willing to post them for me. Via email.

I took my wife, she has been saying for years that she wants a CNC to do wall panels at our house, well they had a monster there. 14 foot long. It retailed for 58,000.00. It's 6 years old. I won it for 1400.00. Yes 1400.00. It's an unbelievable machine. Has everything ready, and I watched it work..

But that's just the beginning, I got everything I have ever wanted and more, they had the greatest bench ive ever seen, multiple vices, 8" thick maple top, custom made monster. I paid 300 for it

I got the 16" laguna for 230.00

I got the tormek with every jig possible for 160

I got 3 delta grinders for 5 a piece.

I got the 16" delta RAS which looks brand new for 45 dollar. Yes. 45

Some incra gear, woodpeckers, and a air arbor press for 27

I got roughly 2500.00 worth of festool paper for 100.00. The exact kinds of paper I use. All boxed up. Old new stock. Also got the long track for the track saw

I got a few more items as well. This auction was unreal, like a dream really.. You should have seen the stuff there, the items were almost free, there were wide belts, shapers, big saws, everything you can imagine and all single phase minus the CNC..
I'm still on overload from it, there were a few items that I regret not getting, like a minimax lathe, nice size, that brought 120 dollars. A full woodpeckers router table w every incra item ever made on it for 170. Also had a big PC router in it.. All in all, an amazing time, I have a moving team coming to move the CNC, there was a forklift onsite, but it wouldn't even move the monster. Again, I will send the pics I have to anyone.

Congrats, that's amazing. How do you find out about these auctions?

Honestly, I found out about it 2 days prior, my neighbor called and told me.

I'm curious what the cnc is as well. Pod style or bed?

Sam Beagle
08-03-2016, 9:44 PM
The auction was just insane. I've been to many auctions, but never a tool auction, I've never seen anything like it. It's a big bed style CNC

Somehow when I first read this, I missed the part about the CNC. That's incredible!!! Imagine the things you can do with that! I hope your shop is huge to fit a 14' CNC!!!

Can you tell us the brand of CNC

John K Jordan

Wow. Hey, maybe that's how woodworkers and turners can avoid the vortex-induced bankruptcy trap - buy everything from the other guy who didn't.

Pics will be posted later today. I promise. It's a techno panel master. The vacuum pump alone costs 7k. It was an extra I guess when they ordered it

Sorry for the delay posting the photos. I was about to call you out as a troll because I hadn't gotten a response, when i thought I should check my junk folder first! Sure enough that's where I found your reply.

That is a really nice bench too!

Questions of the day - what on earth are you going to be doing with a 14' CNC, and will it even fit in your shop?? :p

Holy crap! I wish I knew of such things in my area.

Awesome bench, BS, and RAS. While the CNC might be tempting, the old CNC's can be a huge cost if anything ever goes wrong. I had the chance to buy a used CNC for $1,500 and I was advised against the idea. You know all those updates your computer makes, that box on top of the CNC wants to do the same if you want to run anything new. If you update them many things can go wrong. Swapping out the controllers can cost the same of a new machine I found out. You can search online and read about a few horror stories of guys buying machines that were too old. That vacuum would have been a great item to pick up. Those things run huge hours before needing a re-build. That looks to be between 10 - 20hp, and I suspect that is a bit more than $7k now. One can easily get $3 - 5k for a used one of those.

I felt the same way. I didn't want the CNC because it's just so big. However I did see it work and it's honestly in great shape. One thing I did find out is that it's not 6 years old. It's older. The auctioneer misspoke. As far as that vac pump. That thing ways 7-800 lbs. moving it was awful. I had a guy after the auction offer me 3500 cash right there for just the pump. I will try and get more pics and send them to matt. Thanks again matt for posting those for me.

This is completely ridiculous, you've transcended "gloat" and entered a higher and more transcendent territory here. The only case I can think of that compares was when I met the guy who was the local auction legend for buying $250k worth of silver wire for $40k (aah government auctions). The closest I've gotten was a full set of gear pullers for -$5 (I paid $15 for the "cabinet and all its contents" and then immediately sold some other stuff I didn't want for $20 for -$5 net).

Congratulations.. man.. wow.. shakes head.

I'm guessing that moving everything is heading on towards exceeding the auction cost.

Michael Weber

Were you the only sane person there? As Ryan said this transcends gloat-fullness. Miraculous maybe.

Careful .. you're on the verge of getting banned.

You will have great fun with the CNC once you go thru the process of setting it up. There is a good discussion on the woodweb about all the little hidden costs. That machine wants lots of power. I have looked at the specs for quite a few vacuum pumps. I would like to get one into my basement, so had read the specs on the weight. I am pretty jealous of the pump since I am building one of the poor man solutions now.

This doesn't qualify as a gloat. This takes gloat to an entirely new dimension and has to be in a brand new class to itself.

MAN, I hate you. GREAT score.

Great finds there. I'm curious to know what your total investment ends up being once you get the CNC up and running. Not a jab, that's an honest question. Really curious to know. Thanks for sharing.

I would take a gamble on that cnc as well for $1400. There is nothing they make that you cant retrofit.

Me too. I'm in the learning stages of getting a router at the moment and the software and post are going to cost me probably $25k

Looks like a 4x8 machine? I'm also curious which controller it has.

I'm just ecstatic at the rest of the sale, there are more pics to come here too. Matt has been nice enough to post them for me. Honest to god, this sale was Like a dream, as soon as I started bidding, it's like everyone else stopped. I never seen anything like it. You honest to god wouldn't believe what was basically given away. Wide belts were almost free, that minimax lathe for 120 still haunts me. And the router table was the nicest I've ever seen.

That's the kind of auction where you start wondering how long it will take you to replace the money in the kids' college fund or your 401k, or if the family can get by on ramen and kool-aid for a few weeks. I would have taken a second job for that opportunity.

Sam Beagle
08-05-2016, 11:19 AM
I spent a total of 2276 I believe for everything. I might be off a little. But that number sounds right. I could have prob bought everything at the auction for under 10k. And there was ALOT of items there. 2-3 of everything. Minus CNC

Glad you passed the deal on to someone that could use it.
