Here is the oak mantle in our family room. Finish is 2 coats min wax dark walnut and several coats of gloss lacquer. :D

Very nice Bryan! Like with some of my projects, I can't decide if I like it better lighter (the pics you posted before staining), or darker. Both ways look(ed) good.
Have you thought about adding an overmantel? At least I believe that's what they call them. It's that paneling, sometimes mirrored portion extending above the mantel shelf for 4 or 5 more feet. The design seems to be calling out for one.

I thought about an over panel, but Swmbo just found a watercolor picture for $200 that she wants to buy and hang there! :confused: This picture is closer to the true color, the other was room lights only. :eek:

Bryan, that came out great. I was partial to the unstained look of the wood, but seeing the color of the leather chair and other furnishings in the room, I understand why you went with the wood stain color you did. (The second pic shows the grain very nicely...and I'd bet it looks even better in person.)
