I came across a No.7 Union(needless to say it's in the shop now) the frog looks like an Ohio type with one of those twisted lateral adjusters, the iron is a Stanley Pat.1992, and the sole is a smooth bottom No.7 Union. I was wondering if Union was a good brand.

It was good enough that Stanley bought them out about 1920....and kept using all the parts up, until they were gone. Iron may be a replacement.

As Steven mentioned they were a good plane. All the planes from the Stanley era that I have seen have SW Hart blades.

The early Union planes had a thicker blade than the stock Stanley blade.

Was it Union that had the tapered irons on a Bailey-type frog?

Not sure about that, but I picked up a broken plane for parts that had a Stanley branded tapered iron.
