“The spirit of Hawaii”

This vessel is of Koa Burl. The burl was cut 18 years ago and laid in the shop of a turner in Hawaii. He passed a couple years ago and a wood supplier bought much of this gentleman’s wood. I bought two pieces and this was one of them. The piece started out weight 42 pounds and I had spent my money and now had to get it home. Sent my clothes and my wife's cloths home via USPS. With empty suit cases we paid $ 25 for each suitcase.

Yes it has set in my shop for 18 months, happens all the time until an idea comes to me

This piece stands 12 inches to the top of the vessel. The whale and the fish hook are of dyed plywood

With every trip I look for that special piece of wood and I think I found it here.

Great story and excellent piece. I have made several trips with loaded suitcase myself or even a backpack when piece would not fit in suitcase due to diameter. Koa is super.
