Well after all the wonderful advice from all you SMCers, I finally finished a piece for friends of ours. It's a blanket chest/toy chest for our friends' baby which is due in a about a month and a half. I was trying to come close to their furniture color and the base trim style. It is made from Cherry lightly stained with a red mahogany stain. I then applied 4 coats of Waterlox original sealer and finally a coat of Renaissance wax. I know the cardinal rule here about staining cherry:eek: :o but SWMBO and I both thought our friends would want it to match their furniture right away. Critiques are always welcome and again thanks to everyone on some previously posted questions and requests.

Sean--great and very beautiful work. How about a few words/pics on the great-looking dovetails?

Thanks

Sean,

Those must be some very special friends to warrant such a nice gift. That is an excellent example of craftsmanship and I like all of your choices in design, color and finish.

Great work!

I echo what Corey said, Sean. The dovetails really add a nice accent, and I like the finish. Great job!

Thanks for all the kind words.:) As much as I wanted to do hand cut dovetails, I just don't have the practice.:o I used a Keller jig and it was very easy to use.

Critiques? A classic design, well executed, and made with the prettiest domestic hardwood other than mesquite :D ...what's to critique?

Maybe the middle board on the front could match a little better...but that would be nitpicking. They'll be happy. ;)

I think your friends will think you paid too much for it, and won't believe you made it with your own two hands. Excellent work!

Really nice Sean. I bet your friends will really enjoy and appreciate it. It looks like you had some really nice stock to work with. Did you snap any photos before the finish was applied?

Sean,
Nice work, dovetails take a lot of work - but the result is worth it!

Sean, very nice...I built one very similar a couple of years ago. Go to my thread, headed.."Allow me to intoduce myself" I have a picture of it there..also in cherry. It was one of my most enjoyable projects. I made it for my daughter when you graduated from highschool ..Again..very nice work..I am sure your friends will have it for many years!!

Sean---Nicely done, your frinds will be thrilled.

We are forming a committe to see if, under the circumstances, allowances can be made on the stain issue, given that the piece was made for someone other than yourself. We will issue a statement ASAP, hope to be able to rush this through in about 3 months. :D
