Is douglas fir a good "utility" wood for turning. Does it turn well or splinter bad.:rolleyes:

Never turned DF so I can't help you there, but if it's anything like pine, it makes a terrible mess when you turn it green (sap flying everywhere)

I use 2x12 and 2x10 DF for the square meal plates I make for 18th century reenacting and don't have much problem with it. There is a bit of trouble with end grain but not much and sands out nice.
