Stain color help

I have a piece of light colored Ash that I would like to make it look like Juniper but the local hardware stores don't have the Juniper stain. Does anyone know a common stain that might come close?

Bert, you can be assured that if anyone had a stain named "Juniper", it wouldn't look anything like what you likely want. ;) What you might want to try is working with dyes and figuring out a blend that, after application of sealer and top coats, comes out the color that "you" want to attain. It takes some experimentation and you must to your testing on scraps of the same material you are using for your project for best results. And you do need to do the additional finishing steps (although you don't need multiple tops coats) to insure you see that the end result will be. That will get the color job done. As to making ash look like Juniper physically...not likely. They have completely different grain and pore makeups. Matching for color is about as far as you can go.

This is a piece of wood a friend gave to me to engrave for him, the original piece was Juniper and we made the plaque, I engraved it and yesterday he came to me and said there was a mistake in the engraving. (not my fault they gave me the wrong Dates)anyway they can't find another piece to match the turned urn that goes with it, so he bough this piece of Ash and some scarp so I could try to get it close but I been working on it all day, tried several different engraving settings with different finishes and I'm just not liking it. Could you maybe suggest another specie's that might be a better match. Thanks

Try "stealing" a piece of the wood from the bottom of the urn (you could hide the removed piece with felt to protect the table) and fill in the error and re-carve. If you darken the date then the repair will be almost invisible.

I don't know how large a piece of wood you need, but aromatic cedar, the stuff that comes in packs for lining closets and trunks is very similar to juniper with the tight grain and pink color of the heartwood.

OK heres what I'm trying to replace. 339855 Theres a mistake in the date and we have to redo it.No Juniper available . I have about 9 days to find a piece of wood and redo the Plaque

If you can't find a piece of juniper I would look for another wood that compliments the wood of the urn. That is likely a more satisfactory solution than trying to make something look like what it is not.

John your right. I decided to get a piece of sugar maple. It will engrave nice and I won't stain it just leave it natural and a couple coats of poly should work. thanks for all the suggestions.

WE redid the whole thing in Sugar Maple made it a little bigger added a flag then finished with Teak Oil and carnauba wax340283

Thanks John This was a team effort by 4 AZ,PGR Members. I got the wood ,sanded it down and did the engraving, Dave put the finish on the wood, Michael put the Flag, medallion and medals on it and Gerry turned the Urn. This Saturday several members Arizona Patriot Guard will Escort the Plaque and ash's by motorcycle From Phoenix to Lansing Michigan to be presented to Mel's daughter on July 14th.
