I have an older Hitachi portable planer-jointer, a P 12RA. (So very old, in fact, that the instruction manual expects the owner to regularly service the machine).

I need to sharpen the blades, but I bought it second-hand and the setting gauge for holding the blades at the correct protrusion from the blade holder is MIA.

Is there a technique for getting the blades properly aligned without that gauge?

Warren,

I just scrapped a P 12R planer, I still have the two magnetic blade setting blocks and a spare drive belt. You're welcome to them. Message me and we can set it up.
