No, that is not an interrogative....I have not bowled in years.
My friend Rodger Barrow at East Wake Hardwoods gave me this chunk of wood and written on it was the word "Wana". Rodger did not know anything about it and just said take it and see what you can do with it.
I was able to turn this bowl from the piece Rodger gave me. The blank started out about 2 1/2" larger but developed splits along the sapwood edge that had to be remove so it ended up 9 3/4" in diameter and 2 3/4" deep.
Man this is a hard wood! Wana is also known as "Determa" and "Red Louro" and scientifically is Ocotea rubra. It is used in the ship building industry and it comes from Guiana, Trinidad and Brazil where trees can exceed 5 feet in diameter and more than 130 feet tall.
