Need help

I'm making a toy box for my DIL's brother and his wife. Are there any lid supports on the market that will hold the lid in the open position but also allow the lid to close slowly. I put two of the Stanley spring tension lid supports on, but the lid is still too heavy for them to hold it open. I am going to try three, but not sure if that will work or not.

Have you thought of using gas shocks like are used on cars etc? They come in different strengths, lengths, weights, etc etc

Thanks for the input, it'seems appreciated. The lid weighs about 20 pounds, Ken.
I have thought about the gas struts, just not sure if I can make it work on lid, will look into it more.

HI,

I recently made a large (heavy) blanket chest. Top weighs about 25lbs. I used the torsion hinges from Rockler that Jamie mentioned above . They don't do a "soft-close"...but they do hold the lid up at any angle. Just open it...then close it. The also sell a jig to align the hinge. On the kind you are presently using, they make them for 3 differnt weight ranges. I had one that on a 30lb lid I had to jump on to get it closed. You may have the wrong weight ones.

I used three of them on a heavy lid. There is a torsion calculator link at the order page on Rockler that shows in detail how to measure the lid weight and dimensions to accurately size the hinges. IMHO they are by far the nicest solution for a safe lid support and I'm very happy with the result.

One more suggestion: http://www.rockler.com/soft-down-lid-support High quality, and very smooth, gentle closing- like a gas or hydraulic strut. It shouldn't have any problems keeping the lid open, ir vertical. My grandkids haven't pinched their fingers once one the toy box I built them using this support.
