View Full Version : Have you ever noticed…?

Have you ever noticed that if the edge of the chalice is thin enough and spinning fast enough, you can create the wound and cauterize it in the same motion?

Have you ever noticed that if the edge of a turned form is smooth enough, it is possible to ignore the fact that it is spinning quickly and will cut you?

Have you ever noticed that cauterized wounds somehow start bleeding profusely anyway?

Have you ever noticed that when you are sanding a project and start bleeding, that keeping the blood off of the project becomes more important than keeping the blood inside your body?

Yeah....thin can be overated.....;) Just want to keep light sanding pressure, cause stitches keep you out of the shop for about 3 weeks or more

Do not get blood on the art . Glue foam to a stir stick . Any number of ways ,but don't get blood on the art .

Bandaids--bandaids--staple them to everything in the shop.

I never tried bandaids with staples. I usually just use the sticky side.

On the chalices I just switched to wrapping the sandpaper around one of those sanding belt cleaning sticks.

If you DID use staples, they probably stay on your finger when you try to cut them again next time you sand....

Great post!

That explains the pain.

Stapels also explain the bleeding AFTER the cauterization..

just the reason I keep duct tape handy!

Thin CA glue works but "never" grab the thick and then add hardener. New way to cauterize yeah.

Have you ever noticed that your partner is generally more concerned about the blood rushing out of your body than you are?

Sorry to hear that you had to figure those things out for yourself Brian.

Sanding wasn't part of Brian's original post, but slow sanding speed (500 rpm to as slow as it goes) will help reduce the burning and bleeding. Plus it is more effective sanding...

10 days without drawing blood at the lathe, and then I go an try to cut some hard sour dough bread with a dull bread knife.

At least I cut the finger that is held together with layers of dewaxed shellac.
