I wonder if it engraves like cast or extruded acrylic?

It sounds like it might be more epoxy than wood by the time they get done with it.

soak it for 2 hours in Lye and "other chemicals", which I'd probably rather not know what they are, then add epoxy--

A gallon of lye at HD is about $18, and epoxy isn't cheap... to create 'stronger than glass and doesn't shatter on impact' wood...

Sounds like a very hazardous and expensive to make version of polycarbonate...
