View Full Version : Should I wax over Watco Oil?

I just finished constructing a shop utility cabinet and applied Minwax stain. After letting it dry overnight, I decided to apply Watco Teak Oil that I had on hand. I flooded and let dry 30 minutes and applied a 2nd coat and let dry 20 more minutes before wiping off any excess. I am now letting it dry overnight.

Would it be advisable to apply a coat of paste wax tomorrow or just call it finished at this point? Not looking so much for beauty as I am durability and protection.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Bob,

I built a router table using MDF for the top.
Fine WoodWorking had an article outlining the construction
of this. As recommended in the article, I applied multiple
coats of Watco oil, after drying, I applied a few coats of
wax. I was happy with the finish.

Bob,

Wait at least 72 hours before applying wax. The teak oil takes a while to dry....and if its gummy the result will not be good.

Thanks for that Mark. I was not aware of it and the can said 8-10 hours. I'll wait a couple of days.

Bob, if any areas of the wood had wild grain (like around a knot), seemed to be more than normally porous and soaked up a lot of oil, you might want to wait even longer.
