Finally got the Shaker base finished for my workbench. It seemed big enough to have storage for anything and everything but it filled up pretty quick. Good way to keep the tool population in check I guess.

Wow, well done. I love the storage. I did not do drawers because of the sliding deadman but I really love the convenience. I even thought about putting drawers on the back of the bench. Really well done, and cat approved too!

As a fan of both cats and woodworking, you have two thumbs up from Ohio!

Nice bench. Trust me though, limiting storage space will not limit your tool acquisitions. Its like the 3 theories of how to win an argument with your wife........none work.:D

Thanks everyone, I am thinking of a sliding deadman hopefully it wont prove to big an issue, it worked for the Shakers. Dave, it might just be wishful thinking but its worth a try.

Nice bench, I also like the seat. Did you make it yourself?

Cody Cantrell

Reinis,
I did make the stool. It is made from a bunch of old stuff I had laying around the farm at Grandmas. It is a seat from an old stone rake, PTO cover, and a planter disc.

Great job on the bench. I've been contemplating my own for a while now but every time I get close the love of my life gives me a new project. Just curious, how do you incorporate the red box of Lego's in your woodworking? maybe for quick mock-ups?

Well done Sir! Have to ask though, why would any sane craftsman want to limit tools?

Now we know why you were selling off your old benches. Hope you plan to keep this one.

Rich, yes this is why I havent been keeping other benches although I see what the fuss about Roubos is all about. Hard to get rid of an Emmert.
Curt, I still have plenty of tools just try not to have many doubles.
thanks everyone for the positive comments

I also like the bench. You can use the pull out drawers to support your work in place of the sliding deadman though. Did you use metal drawer slides for the drawers or wooden runners?

Cody Cantrell

Wooden runners. I used the same system they showed awhile back in FWW.

Thanks Megan, I drew alot of inspiration from Glens article a few years back.

Pat, wouldn't planing with a deadman and open drawers get all the the very stuff you don't want in your drawers, in your drawers?

But your suggestion got me thinking: what about dog holes in the drawer faces?

Very nice bench Cody. I like Prashun's idea of dog holes in the drawer fronts...but given how nice they look, I don't think I'd be able to bring myself to doing that. Just use it for awhile...you'll come to know if you need a deadman or not.

Cody, was this shaker bench from plans or something you worked out the design?

Cody Cantrell

No formal plans, I wanted to be able to use holdfasts so when I designed it I put the drawer bank in the middle and doors on the side. Now I can put holes in the top on either side.
