View Full Version : I need a 1 3/4" x 6' dowel!

Actually, two. I have spent hours online today trying to find a supplier.

Wood species not that critical, but I've been focused on oak, maple or birch. Amazon has 2" x 6' poplar dowels which might work- I'd have to talk to my client.

I can't believe this is this hard.

Anybody know of a supplier? A few months back someone here was selling 2" maple dowels and I almost bought a few 'just to have'. Man O man, I wish I had!

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhh!

California Dowel sells what I want but they are out of stock in the size I want.

Awesome- thanks Sam. I wish it at least said what the species was. "Plain Wood Pole" - Geeze. Definitely an option tho, thanks again.

Here's a place that sells them if you will take a box of 10 for $250. Might be worth a call about one. http://www.bearwood.com/product4167.html

Yeah, I saw Bearwood.com- that's what I was running into today online. This is for a job and if I were to spend the money to buy 10, I'll end up working for extra dowels instead of money.

But you're right- might be worth asking about a smaller order. I just always take that as the minimum order is 10.

YIKES! now I see it's a special order with a lead time of 1-4 weeks!

I need them right now!

The folks who hang out in the turners area might have a better idea where to find this.

A handrail is where I started. The flat bottom nixed that idea.

My local contractors lumber yard has a very well equipped shop. I may contact them about turning 2 6 foot dowels, but I get the Willies just thinking about what they might charge.

You could also get creative/resourceful and turn a couple 3' sections on a lathe and join them with a large dowel.

Dave....do a Google search with this for the search "round 1 3/4" red oak handrail". There are several companies that offer what you want and some are cheaper though farther away. I would find one close to you to decrease shipping costs and time.

Good Heavens, Stairparts.com wants 68 bucks for shipping. That basically doubles the cost. Ugh.

Not an option. There will be stress applied in the middle.

Yeah, I haven't abandoned that idea. That's usually where I start, and then 4 man hours later I find out I could have bought one for less than 1-2 hours labor.

Looks like woodstairs.com is the winner.

Only 26 bucks shipping.

WOW. Hours online vs. minutes on SMC. Thanks everyone, especially Ken Fitz.

you might consider a dowel plate. Hook one end to the trailer hitch and tow it through.

Cut finger joints in a couple 3' dowels and glue the ends together. They do it with 2x4s. No reason it won't work with dowels.

How critical is it that it be round? An octagonal cross section is very easy to rip.

A friend threw a ballet barre from a studio he demo'd into my workshop last week, I just put a tape to the end and it's 1 3/4" thick.

It's doug fir - I forget if you have a specific wood in mind - but maybe one of those would work? - they for sure come long.

Dave Zellers
04-15-2016, 7:57 PM
That's funny because that is exactly what this is for- a ballet barre.

I found exactly what I was looking for at WoodStairs.com and ordered it on Wednesday. Now I just need them to ship it!

I'm feeling rather foolish because I got so hung up on the word 'dowel" I couldn't see past it. I should have known to search for 'handrail'.

DUMB!
