I have a 70-100 rikon mini lathe and it has really been a good lathe but I have noticed that when I apply friction polish and put pressure on the piece im working on it seems to slow it down,,i thought it might be the belt,,the belt does have a small cut in it but is still useable,,but its the same one that came on it,,,,i know I need another one but could this be causing the problem,,and does anyone know of where other than ordering one that I might be able to purchase a after market belt,,one that is thicker,,thank you

The problem is that the lathe is underpowered, and your probably using to much pressure.

If you are turning with a drive center instead of a chuck or piece screwed to faceplate your live tailstock may be loosening up on you.

... and even if the belt is fine (it sounds like it is), is there a way to adjust tension on the belt? You don't want the belt ridiculously taut and having it too loose can cause it to lose its grip when it's running under load.
