This recent thread about blades for bow saws has given me as good a chance as I may get to ask a question that I've had for a while. What is the difference between a bow saw and what I've heard called a turning saw?
Is what they use to cut logs in cross-bucks properly called a bow saw?

As I understand it, "Bow saw" is a generic term that refers to both turning, and non-turning varieties. "Turning saw" denotes a bow saw with a blade that can rotate, but I think it is most often used to describe, specifically, a very small, lightweight bow-saw with thin, spidery limbs and a very narrow blade which is used specifically for cutting curves, like a coping saw. Some larger bow-saws can turn as well; I think the distinction is a bit ambiguous. They're all "bow saws" though.
