Popular Woodworking in the new issue has a set of plans to make set of size 4, 6, 8. Roubo Hollows and Rounds.

Has anyone looked at the plans and have a opinion on the design?
Making Hollow and Rounds is on my very long list of things I would like to build.

Hello Dave,

Building a set of hollows and rounds has been on my ToDo list for a long time as well. I'd had always been a bit intimidated making traditional style British planes given I was not sure about my ability to make the long mortises extremely accurately.

However, when I saw the fantastic article in Popular Woodworking, I realized I could fairly easily make the Roubo style. I started last week and it's coming along nicely. From a design perspective, I think they will work very well. These planes do appear to be thicker and heavier than their counterparts. I assume it's to lend strength given the blade/wedge are not enclosed in the mortise.

I had some flat sawn hard maple and glued it up and cut it as QS material. I even shoved a small piece of walnut in for decoration. The wedge will be walnut as well.

I even had some 1/8" thick O1 steel that I'll use for the blades. I've not heat treated O1 before and I'm looking forward to it.

I've got the wedges roughed out and I'll work on getting those fitted next week. So far it's been really fun and pretty easy.

Michael

I'm considering making them as well. I don't have any feedback on the design, per se. However if you didnt see them, here's a couple videos of the author talking about them/demonstrating them. They seem to work well. For those not wanting to watchm the punchline is that the open side style takes more wood, so it is not ideal for a profesional planemaker, but for user made planes, it is much easier/faster/more acurate to make open side molding planes.
