View Full Version : Keeping a "cookie" from splitting

I have a section about 10" in dia that I want to use as a lamp base. It is about 3 " thick. I will drill out the pith for the lamp cord. How do i treat it finish it to keep it from splitting. The section was cut within the last day or two.

Look into Pentacryl or polyethylene glycol at wood places like Woodcraft or Rockler.

Light a few candles, throw a horseshoe over your left shoulder and cross your fingers.

Pentacryl is the way to go. PEG is old school and doesn't take s finish. Pentacryl does work and will take a finish.

I have 42" cookie , 4" thick from a cottonwood. Might end up as poor firewood. About a year old and still solid and heavy.

All the cracking typically starts from the pith and radiates outward. Remove the pith ASAP and it'll help minimize stress cracking.
