This tree is near a friends house in an urban neighborhood. I believe it may be elm. It stands around 75 feet high and only a driveway separating two houses. I once found a elm burl stump in the local wood dump that yielded 5 beautiful burl bowls. Looked healthy, and properly will still be there after my friend and I are both gone!

Yes Bob, it' very lumpy and bumpy, but, I don't think it's elm. If it is, it's got a different bark than I've ever seen.

Just a guess. Didn't want to be hugging trees in public. Leaves would make it a lot easier.

My first thought was that it was cotton wood. Nice wood porn...

I wouldn't be surprised Reed. There are a lot of cottonwood in this area. Sometimes the seeds look like snow on the lawns!

Now that is an unusual tree. Not sure I would want a tree that large that close to my house but since it's not mine I guess I don't have to worry.

Seeing how close that tree is to the house reminds me of this old video of a couple guys taking down a tree in closer quarters.

And the neighbor's house is just across the drive. At 75 feet it would make the distance and probably to the far side of that house.

Fairly positive that is a Siberian Elm. I have one in my back yard. Bark looks pretty much identical. No burls on mine though.

But.....if it was in your own yard.......would you cut it down for turning wood? ;)

I've had 4 huge Siberian Elm's taken down in my yard so far, and have one more to go. Really messy trees, that grow like weeds.

That is my fist guess. The limb have that vertical look to them. They are reaching up searching for sunlight. I know when it is taken down it won't be cheap. Urban area removal gets expensive around Chicago.

I DON'T KNOW!?!?!? That close to the home, it looks really dangerous! Maybe you should tell the homeowner you want to help them out with it?
