My recent post on searching for a brad point bit made me think about how different bits enter the surface of wood.

Here is a comparison:

From left to right is a Russell Jennings auger bit, my recently acquired Irwin brad point bit, a twist bit with a wood drill point with a tang for use in a brace and a more common twist bit with a point more for general work and metal.

The auger bit and the brad point bit with spurs leave a much cleaner edge when entering the wood than the other two.

The auger bit was started at 90º to the work, withdrawn and then reset to drill on an angle. The brad point bit and standard bit were used in a drill press on an angled fixture made for the purpose. The wood point bit was used in a brace and no attempt was made to angle the cut.

Here is my most recent hat hanging project:

It still needs a bit of work and the design isn't finalized.

The round thing with a handle is used for marking circles and parts of circles on work. This one is for marking two circles side by side on a piece of 1X6 to be cut out by a bandsaw, thus forming the top of the heart.

I didn't think to try a spoon bit.
