A small study in Finland examined serum [blood] of 183 individuals 20 years after they were immunized with measles, mumps, rubella vaccine. 73% of these people had detectable antibody to mumps. Based on that data, I'd say one can be reasonably safe assuming 20+ years for the majority of people immunized.

I don't know about shots, but I had mumps on both sides as a kid. Had them again on right side when I was in my thirties.

Most folks these days get an MMR shot at some point in their lives (two, actually, in short succession). The Measles portion is essentially good for your lifetime. The Rubella portion is good for 15-20 years, and the Mumps portion is good for 10+ years. After those time periods, efficacy drops slowly, but there's no set time frame at which one could say "you NEED a new shot". So generally they'll give the MMR every 10-20 years, depending upon situation.

I don't want to divert the discussion, but consider a shingles vaccine. I have seen the pain shingles cause and they have reduced the age by which they recommend getting it. langski

I thought the shingles vaccine commercials were a sales tactic until I someone in the family got a mild case and it scared the heck out of me.
You can call your local health department and ask them about timeframes for any vaccines. My county does most of them for nominal cost.
