I was using the above mentioned sander with 180 grit paper to smooth two pieces of maple. The first and second sander I used 120 and 150 grit respectively, and the wood was looking good when I started with the third sander with the 180 grit on it I could barely hold the sander. The vibration was horrific.
I took it back into the shop and found that the bearing's inner shaft was gouged out by the inner race of both of the bearings. I thought the bearings were shot, but when in fact the bearing spun on the inner shaft. This of course is thin steel that functions as the pad retaining nut. The inside is threaded for the 5/16" x 24 stud coming from the pad.
Now I'm not trying to play cheap BUT, the two 6002 2RS bearings I have in the tool box has a price of $2.88 marked on the boxes.
The only way Porter Cable supplies the replacement part is an assembly consisting of both bearings and the housing priced anywhere between $38.00 and $46.00!! Plus $10.00 in shipping. What a rip-off!
Has anyone here run into this issue? If so, anything short of the possible $48.00 repair? I was thinking about building up the void with a mig and then turning it on the lathe. I don't think epoxy would be a permanent repair and would and crumble and I was thinking of knurling the sleeve portion but there is not much of a mass there.

Be thankful the Porter Cable part is available. There are a great many Porter Cable (and Delta) parts that aren't available any price. If you have a metal lathe it seems like it'd be worth a shot.
