I was commissioned to make this cremation urn for Sherry Anderson, the wife of a friend from Port Orchard, Washington. Figured maple, 9.5"H X 5"D with a plum cap piece set into teak. The request was for a blue theme, so I added a slight blue hue to the figured areas and also added an alternate cap with crushed Quartz.

Curious to hear which cap you prefer.

I like the quartz. Especially if the request is to incorporate some blue in the piece.

I like the blue. Looks like the earth as the "big blue marble" and connotes the infinite.

Very beautiful. What finish did you use?

Rudd lacquer. 6-8 coats, wet-sanded to 800, then polished.

Russell: I like the blue quartz, but I also like the other, so no vote from me. I do have question, though - Do you use threaded caps? If so, how do you do them?

This particular urn uses a compression fit cap that I secure with museum wax, but I often use threaded inserts I purchase from Lee Valley. Not too much to them; each half has a flange and you simply turn the lid/finial to match the size. Here's one I did awhile back, adding a Taqua nut knob. I let it stand proud, but it just as easily have been a finial or a flat quartz insert.

I'd have to go with the blue one too.
