I'm hoping someone can explain to me how to turn a collar for a hollow form or direct me to a how-to link. I really like the look of a hollow form with an ebony collar and would like to learn how to turn one. I assume the collar is designed so you can use a wider opening to turn the form, but I'd like to know if my assumption is correct or not.

Thanks,

Jack

I would do most of the shaping with the collar workpiece on a glue block, including cutting a tenon to fit in the opening of the primary workpiece. Then glue them together. In some cases, the vessel would need to be remounted to complete the final shaping if the collar needs to be blended with the form of the host vessel. (I would use vacuum for that if posible)
