Recently moved to Boalsburg (next to State College). Any recommendations as a source of hardwood would be appreciated.
Thanks,
EG

Groff and Groff Lumber, Inc. Quarryville, Pa. Good people to deal with.

Second on Groff and Groff. Well worth the drive for you. There are also Hearne Hardwoods and Talarico.

I live in DuBois, about 60 miles west of you, and I give another vote for Grof and Grof. I've found, even with shipping costs, their lumber is less expensive than any place local, and the quality of their lumber is exactly as described, if not much better. Very fair to deal with!

Lewis Lumber Products (http://www.lewislp.com) in Picture Rocks.

Peachey Hardwood Flooring (http://www.peacheyhardwoodflooring.com) in Reedsville/Belleville. Their website doesn't show it, but they do sell rough cut hardwood.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Craigslist and auctions for me. I've found many sellers on Craigslist around me in the Harrisburg area. Some with air dried some with kiln dried.

Groff is prob a few hour drive from you but does have a great reputation and prices are better than some other dealers. Middletown lumber for example.

And for your cabinet-grade plywood needs, check out Industrial Plywood (http://www.industrialplywood.com/) in Lewistown.

Good suggestion here for plywood. If you go to Alderfer lumber it's on your way. Been to both of these.

Of the other places suggested, I've only been to Lewis lumber in Picture Rocks. Seems like Wellsboro or Quarryville would be pretty far unless you couldn't find something closer.

I agree about Industrial Plywood...I use them out of Reading (they deliver inexpensively) and they have been great. I'm not familiar with local sources for lumber in the "Happy Valley" area (I had not discovered woodworking until many years after living there for four years in the dorms and fraternity) but agree that heading north to Irion or south to Hearne and Groff are not terrible ideas for when you want great selection. But I bet there are local mills with really nice choices, too.

From my house in Happy Valley, here are estimated travel times to some sources.

Peachey Hardwood Flooring

45 minutes

Alderfer Lumber

1 hour 27 minutes

Lewis Lumber Products

1 hour 31 minutes

Irion Lumber

1 hour 42 minutes

The Hardwood Mall

2 hours 5 minutes

Groff & Groff Lumber

2 hours 38 minutes

If there is a closer source, I would love to know about it.

+1 on Groff and Groff. About a dozen orders, and only one 13" wide cherry board missing. I called and they sent out the replacement no charge for the wood, or the shipping to California at that time.

One more: Middletown Lumber, just southeast of Harrisburg; 1 hour, 52 minutes from me.

They carry the usual hardwoods. They also have a lot of western red cedar in stock, which I have not seen at other regional suppliers.
